A practical and compassionate guide by Dr. Dina Peralta
Hi Everyone,
As a specialist in obesity medicine and metabolic health, one of the most common questions I hear during the warmer months is: “Can I stay on my GLP-1 medication and still enjoy the summer?”
The answer is: Absolutely, yes!
But just like anything related to your health, it requires attention, adjustment, and a lot of self-compassion.

1. Hydration Isn’t Optional—It’s Essential
GLP-1 medications can sometimes reduce your appetite and even your sense of thirst. Combine that with the summer heat, and you’re at higher risk of dehydration.
My recommendation:
Keep a water bottle with you at all times.
Add electrolytes if you're exercising or sweating a lot.
Be mindful with alcohol—it can dehydrate you and affect your glucose levels.
2. Listen to Your Body: Less Can Be More
The heat changes how your body responds to both exercise and medication.
If you’re feeling dizzy or nauseous, take a break.
Opt for gentler activities like evening walks, swimming, or shaded yoga.
Don’t feel guilty for slowing down. Adapting isn’t giving up—it’s taking care of yourself.
3. Eat to Nourish
Summer often brings barbecues, vacations, and sweet temptations. And it’s okay to enjoy them—mindfully. GLP-1 helps you feel full sooner, but that doesn’t mean you should skip meals or cut out entire food groups.
Choose fresh, fiber-rich foods and lean proteins.
Keep meals colorful, simple, and satisfying.
And yes—you can enjoy that tropical fruit or summer treat. The key is intention and moderation.
4. Enjoy the Sun—But Be Smart About It
Some people on GLP-1 medications report mild heat sensitivity. Protect your skin and energy:
Use sunscreen.
Wear light, breathable clothing.
Seek shade when needed and avoid peak sun hours when possible.
5. Remember Your Why
No journey is perfectly linear. Some days are easier than others, and there may be times when you question whether it’s worth it. On those days, I want you to remember this:
You’re doing this because you chose to take care of yourself.Every step, no matter how small, is a step toward healing, strength, and freedom.
This summer, you can absolutely enjoy, explore, rest, and thrive—while staying on track with your GLP-1 treatment.
With care and commitment,
